Wyrallah/Wilcannia (North Coast Steam)

Wyrallah, having participated in November 1941 in the search for HMAS “Sydney” survivors, was commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy during 1942 as a Fleet Auxiliary, being renamed later in the year as HMAS “Wilcannia”. She resumed her original name on return to owners at war’s end.

Wyangerie (North Coast Steam)

On one of its voyages along the coast, Wyangerie entered Sydney Harbour just before 9 p.m. on 31 May 1942, less than one hour after the three Japanese midget submarines I.22, I.24 and I.27 had done the same.

Wollongbar (North Coast Steam)

The company’s second war loss when, on 29 April 1943, it was torpedoed off Crescent Head on the New South Wales north coast, Wollongbar sank immediately, taking with it thirty-seven men including the Master, the Second Officer and all the Engineers.Ten crew survived. Part of its cargo of boxed butter was still being found on local beaches twenty years later. Wollongbar had earlier that month assisted in rescuing survivors from a ship afire further north.

Uki (North Coast Steam)

Requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy in 1939, Uki’s role was minesweeper, during November 1940 recovering one of the many mines laid off the New South Wales south coast.
